Man injured by his gun after shooting at youth baseball game at Wingate University: Report

Police are investigating after a shooting at a youth baseball game prompted a lockdown at a university in North Carolina.

According to the school alert system, Wingate University went on lockdown around 8 p.m.

The school confirmed a shooting took place at the baseball field on campus. They also shared that one person is in custody. Police confirmed that the shooting did not involve a member of the campus community.

Around 8:30, the school shared the threat on campus ended.

WCNC reports a campus-wide email shared by a university spokesperson said the shooting happened just after 7 p.m. while a youth baseball game was happening. Police say a man was seen driving “erratically down Wilson Street, jumped out of his car, and entered the field,” the outlet reports.

Multiple shots were fired, but the university email said he was hurt by his own gun and airlifted to a hospital and that no other injuries were reported, the outlet says.

Police remain at the scene continuing to investigate.
