Memorial wall honors American veterans in Marion, Illinois – KBSI Fox 23 Cape Girardeau News

MARION, IL (KBSI) – The Global War on Terror brings its Wall of Memorial to Marion, Illinois, and continues to travel across the country to honor and remember the veterans who lost their lives fighting for this country and its freedom.

The memorial wall is currently located at Oasis Powersports in Marion and will be open to the public until Monday afternoon, July 1.

Michael Gasperini is a board member of the organization and tells Fox23 that the names on the plaque “are the names of all of our brothers and sisters on this wall who were killed during the conflicts in the Middle East. The reason it's called the global memorial wall is because it goes back to 1983, when the bombing took place. So on the wall are the soldiers who were killed during that development. Every name that's there was killed in some action against us Americans.”

Sam Adkins and Callahan Roper, two Marion High School football players who helped organize the event, told Fox23 what it meant to them to help build the memorial wall.

Sam Adkins said, “It's always a great feeling to do something like this for the community, like helping the Civic Center or taking care of these veterans, no matter what the cause is.”

Callahan Roper said, “The team can help at any time, especially veterans or our community. It's a great opportunity for us to give back and give to them.”

The 120-foot-long wall is a moving monument symbolizing honor, strength, courage, loyalty and American family values.

Gasperini concluded by talking about one of the most important parts of the wall and how to include a veteran you love who has passed away. “On one side of the wall, there are over 10,000 names, and on the other side, there is all of history. There are two plaques on that wall that are also very special, their blank plaques. And you've probably heard that 22 veterans die every day. So if you have a veteran who committed suicide, you can put their name on it and they will continue to travel despite the demons and devils they may face when they return from combat, and make sure they, too, are always remembered.”
