Illinois police rescue of aggressive snapping turtle goes viral

Do you think the police academy trains for such situations?

An Illinois police officer has caused a stir after recently rescuing a snapping turtle that was trying to cross a busy road.

Police rescue snapping turtle

It was a matter of “right place at the right time,” as the now-viral turtle certainly needed help. A video shared by Joliet police shows the turtle slowly crossing a busy road near the Rock Run Greenway Trail.

An officer on the scene noticed cars driving around the turtle as it slowly tried to crawl to safety.

“The turtle was having difficulty crossing the road, so a 'police escort' was provided for the final leg of the journey to a safer environment where the turtle was originally headed,” the department wrote on Facebook.

Video captured by the officer's body camera shows that the snapping turtle was not happy about being pushed off the road. Eventually, the officer has to pick it up.

“You’re fine,” the officer reassures the turtle as its head repeatedly pops out from under its shell.

The video has been viewed more than 40,000 times since it was first posted.

In addition to the thousands of views, the video has also generated some hilarious comments on the Joliet Police Department's Facebook page.

“Pay the fine. One ticket for driving too slow and another for crossing the road illegally,” commented Eric Rudolph.

Others noticed the turtle's persistent snapping as it was carried away from the road.

“Make sure you count the fingers you have left,” Bobby Huffman said on Facebook after watching the video.
