With Georgia's hot summer in full swing, here's everything you need to know about sun protection – WSB-TV Channel 2

ATLANTA – When it’s as hot as it is in Atlanta, with temperatures around 30 degrees, your skin needs a little extra attention.

Linda Stouffer from Channel 2 offers what doctors say many people are missing when it comes to using sunscreen and protecting their skin during Georgia's hot summers.

When you go out in the sun, sun protection is the most important thing, that's what doctors in Georgia are happy to hear.

But some doctors are now fighting back against social media posts that urge people not to use sunscreen.

“There is so much nonsense out there,” said Dr. Mary Alice Mina, a dual-certified dermatologist in Atlanta Channel 2 Action News“It's so important that dermatologists educate people that sunscreen is safe and that it really is the best way to protect yourself from skin cancer.”

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends looking for a chemical or mineral sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and broad spectrum. This will protect you from both UVA and UVB rays.

It's also important to use the right amount of sunscreen – you may need a lot more of it than you think.

Adults are recommended to use one ounce of sunscreen, which is enough to fill a shot glass.

According to doctors, the protective creams and sprays can be used safely even on very young children.

“We can start using sunscreen at six months of age,” said Dr. Dorie Saxon, pediatrician at Kaiser Permanente Channel 2 Action News.

Saxon and her daughter cool off by making fruit ice cubes. She said it's important to apply sunscreen early in the day, at least 15 minutes before heading out, and to reapply it after you've sweated.

“Give[e] “Leave it on for a few minutes before putting on your clothes, and then reapply when you're outside, ideally every two hours and after getting out of the water,” Saxon said. “People apply it once and then forget to reapply. Sun protection includes sunscreen, but it also includes a lot more. It includes wearing a hat when you're outside, wearing sunglasses and wearing sun-protective clothing.”

Hats are a good way to protect yourself from the sun, but make sure you find shade.

Doctors say skin cancer is on the rise. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, if you experience five or more sunburns, your risk of melanoma can double.
