Euro 2024: Spain's flawless record will be put to the test in the round of 16 by surprise team Georgia

COLOGNE, Germany (AP) — Spain will face Georgia in the round of 16. Euro 2024 on Sunday. Spain is widely considered one of the tournament favorites after winning all three of its group matches, but Georgia has so far achieved the shock result of Euro 2024 by Victory against Portugal. Kick-off is at 9pm local time (7pm GMT) in Cologne. Here you can find out everything you need to know about the game:

Facts about the game

— Spain were the only team to finish the group stage with a perfect record of three wins. 1-0 win against defending champion Italy underlined his abilities and won the European Championship title for the first time since 2012.

— Spain had no problems beating Georgia twice in qualifying last year. 7:1 defeat Lamine Yamal set the record as the youngest goalscorer in a European Championship qualifier just two months after his 16th birthday.

— Georgia's rapid development under coach Willy Sagnol was evident in their 2-0 win over Portugal to secure qualification. Their deep defence and quick counterattacks were similar to those of Albania, who caused Spain plenty of problems on Monday and beat Spain 1-0.

— The winner will play against either Germany or Denmark in the quarter-finals in Stuttgart on July 5.

About the team

— Fitness could be crucial. Spain have not played since Monday and were able to replace ten players from their lineup against Albania. Georgia, on the other hand, were pushed to the limit against Portugal on Wednesday and have had two days less to recover.

— Spain coach Luis de la Fuente can call on his entire squad as midfielder Rodri returns from a one-match suspension, while three defenders, including right-back Dani Carvajal, would miss a potential quarter-final if they pick up a yellow card against Georgia.

— Georgia midfielder Anzor Mekvabishvili is suspended after receiving a yellow card against Portugal. Captain and defender Guram Kashia is one of four players who are just one yellow card away from a suspension.

In numbers

— Georgian striker Georges Mikautadze was surprisingly the top scorer of all teams in the group stage of Euro 2024 with three goals, including a penalty against Portugal. None of the Spanish players scored more than once.

What you say

— “Today we saw that you can play against any team and win. It doesn't matter who the opponent is, because there are no easy teams at the European Championships.” — Georgia striker Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, when asked about Spain after the win against Portugal.

— “A few months ago we were not candidates (to win the title) and now we are favourites. But that doesn't mean anything. We have always said that we are coming here to win the European Championship and that is our mentality.” — Spain left-back Alejandro Grimaldo.
