Legendary South Carolina football and baseball alumnus and NFL veteran gets new coaching job

South Carolina football fans watched wide receiver Nyck Harbor run track this spring, but Harbor is far from the first athlete to play two sports for the Gamecocks. Names like Bruce Ellington (football/basketball), Damiere Byrd (football/track), Jeff Grantz (football/baseball), Bobby Bryant (football/baseball), Derek Watson (football/basketball) and others have played another sport for USC in addition to their time on the football team.

Another Gamecock who played two sports was the legendary Sheldon Brown. One of the best cornerbacks in the history of the South Carolina football program, Brown also spent time with the South Carolina baseball team.

After a strong NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns, his time on the field continued. Brown spent years as a baseball coach and has parlayed that work into a new job.

According to a report by Michael Burgee of the Rock Hill Herald, Sheldon Brown is the new head coach of the baseball team at South Pointe High School in Rock Hill. He previously served as the head coach of the baseball team at Clover Middle School.

Brown, who hails from the nearby town of Fort Lawn in Chester County and attended Lewisville High School, will be taking his first job as a high school head coach.

During his football career at South Carolina, Sheldon Brown was a two-time All-SEC player and was selected to the All-American teams in the 2000 and 2001 seasons. During his college career, he had 9 interceptions, although he was not targeted very often. He was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles.

Brown was part of one of the best secondary units in Gamecocks history, playing (at least for part of his career) alongside stars and all-time greats like Rashad Faison, Andre Goodman, Arturo Freeman, DeAndre Eiland, Willie Offord and Dunta Robinson.
