Authorities have identified a man who was shot and killed by police in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Friday morning.

Manchester Police posted on social media just after 10am on Friday that they were involved in investigations in the area of ​​Beech Street and Bridge Street. In a later update, they said they were investigating a shooting.

The New Hampshire Attorney General's Office announced in a press release later in the day that they had responded to a report of a police shooting that occurred in Manchester on Friday morning. They said an adult male was shot and taken to an area hospital with injuries that police described as life-threatening.

In an update Friday afternoon, the Attorney General's Office described the sequence of events that led to the shooting. They said Manchester police approached a man on Bridge Street to speak with him shortly after 9:30 a.m. The man told the officer he had a gun, and the officer told him to keep his hands visible.

Instead, the man reached into his pocket to retrieve the gun. A struggle ensued, during which the man fired a weapon that was later determined to be a pistol, and the officer returned fire. The man was hit and taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

On Saturday, the Attorney General's Office identified the man killed as 56-year-old Andrew E. Smith of Manchester. An autopsy performed Saturday determined his cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen and the manner of death was homicide.

The officer involved in the incident was wearing a body-worn camera that recorded the incident. The footage is being retained and reviewed. The officer was not injured.

The identity of the police officer who shot the man will not be released until official questioning takes place, which is expected to take place sometime in the next five to ten business days.

The Attorney General's Office said the circumstances of the shooting remained under investigation.
