Colt McCoy remembers his love for Texas football

For former Texas Longhorns quarterback Colt McCoyIt wasn't always written in the stars that he would end up at the Austin-based university. The legendary Longhorns signal-caller grew up in rural West Texas and seemed destined to end up at another Texas university. But one trip changed all that.

At a recent appearance at McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning ShowMcCoy revealed when he really fell in love with the program, naming the exact moment when he realized he was two points behind against the orange and white borders.

“My mom and dad both attended Abilene Christian University, so my childhood memories are like going back to their alma mater in Abilene and watching those football games,” opened McCoy“Texas was the flagship school. I mean, there's no doubt about it; every kid wants to play at UT.”

I didn't grow up in Austin. I grew up on a farm in West Texas, and my moment was [when] I was invited to a one-day camp at UT – I went to camp and my name just kind of got thrown around. I got in the car with my dad, he was driving back to where I grew up. I looked at my dad and said, “Dad, I don't know if I'll ever get to play here. I don't know if I'll ever have the opportunity to play here. But if I do, of all the schools I've ever seen… it's this one.”

And how did McCoy's father take his revelation? According to the legendary Longhorns quarterback: with a pinch of salt.

“My dad just chuckled as if to say, 'Yeah, buddy, good luck. I hope you can do it one day.' Abilene Christian looks good for you. And sure enough, it happened.

McCoy went on to say that his father's skepticism was based more on the odds than on whether his son had the skill and ability to one day play at the University of Texas. The Longhorns have often been viewed as the flagship university and the state's football program. Because of this, they are usually able to cherry-pick the best talent in each recruiting class.

It was good for Texas and McCoy that the former head coach Mack Brown saw something in him that made him believe he could be the program's future signal-caller. McCoy went on to have a brilliant career at Texas that included a wealth of trophies and awards, and he etched his name in the program's history books.
