Paul George plans meeting with Magic at the start of free agency

The Magic are one of three teams Clippers forward Paul George will face once NBA free agency begins on the West Coast Sunday night and Monday, according to multiple reports.

Orlando, which made several moves Saturday to maximize its available salary cap space this summer, will join the 76ers and Clippers as potential suitors planning to meet with the six-time All-NBA forward in the coming days, ESPN and The Athletic reported.

According to reports, George informed the Clippers on Saturday that he was declining his player option worth $48.7 million to become an unrestricted free agent.

That same day, the Magic declined club options on two reserves, Joe Ingles ($11 million) and Moe Wagner ($8 million), to create over $52 million in salary cap space. The franchise also did not tender a qualifying offer to 2019 first-round pick Chuma Okeke, who now becomes an unrestricted free agent.

Orlando is expected to resume free agency talks with Ingles and Wagner next week, a league source told the Sentinel.

George, 34, has played the most games in a single year (74) since being traded from the Thunder to the Clippers before the 2019-20 season.

For Los Angeles, the four-time All-Defensive player averaged 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists this season, while shooting career highs of 47.1% from the field, 41.3% from 3-point range and 90.7% from the free throw line.

In a recent episode of his podcast “Podcast P with Paul George,” the NBA superstar praised Jamahl Mosley’s team, which won 47 games and finished fifth in the East, and specifically mentioned the development of All-Star rookie Paolo Banchero.

“Orlando surprised me,” said George. “They are another young team [with] no great expectations. When the young guys step up and look promising to lead an organization, that's one of the best things you can experience. That's the most beautiful thing about this game.

“As you get older – and I'm speaking from the perspective of a competitor and a veteran of the league – when you see that the game is in good hands, when these young guys realize, 'Okay, this is my time,' I think Paolo has done that and he's doing that now in Orlando. Orlando has definitely surprised me.”

And the Magic believe that after their comeback on the court, they will be an attractive location for free agents like George.

“From teams who understand what you want to achieve this summer, from free agents who want to consider your place as a potential destination, [it] “It's definitely a sign to people: 'Hey, the Magic are coming,'” President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman said recently.

But George will be expensive.

He will be eligible to sign a four-year, $212 million contract with teams that have salary cap space. He is also eligible to sign a four-year, $221 million contract and negotiate a no-transfer clause to stay with the Clippers, ESPN reported.

Negotiations between teams and their own free agents began the day after the NBA Finals (June 18), but talks between teams and any other future free agents cannot begin until June 30 at 6:00 p.m. ET.

Teams can begin signing free agents at 12:01 p.m. ET on July 6.
