Denny Hamlin felt “helpless” because he could not ride on the same line as Christopher Bell in New Hampshire

Denny Hamlin watched in awe as Christopher Bell dominated the USA Today 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on rain tires after racing resumed following a red flag.

When the green flag returned to Loudon, Bell was the man to beat and the No. 20 took its third win of 2024 to tie Hamlin. Afterward, Hamlin explained what it was like watching Bell hold off the field while the No. 11 driver tried in vain to mimic Bell's driving.

“For example, when I watched Bell, when he took off right after the rain and gained five places in the first corner, it felt like I was driving the same line as him and almost ran over the fence,” Hamlin said in the latest episode of his Harmful acts Podcast. I mean, the same thing – right up to the foot, right where it was, and my car went straight ahead. It wouldn't go. It just wouldn't turn left.

“Sometimes there are just differences in the setup – and in fact you saw that some cars that weren't so good in the dry suddenly did well in the wet. The setup could have suited their setup better than others.”

At least Denny Hamlin was happy for Joe Gibbs Racing as a whole, as Christopher Bell secured another win for the organization at Loudon. Still, the veteran driver hopes he can match Bell's skill level the next time the Cup Series runs on rain tires.

Denny Hamlin names the four NASCAR drivers who race best in wet weather conditions

Denny Hamlin believes that a handful of drivers are superior to the others when it comes to wet weather racing.

While it Christopher Bell Hamlin believes there are a few drivers who have shown they have what it takes to win when the weather is wet on the race track. He believes it was winning and the best performance.

“I mean, I think you have [Kyle] Larson, [Chase] Briscoe was good under these conditions. CBell (Christopher Bell) comes to mind. Chase Elliottalthough I'm surprised he didn't run better. I don't know if he sustained any damage or not. I just remember the race at COTA, which was held in wet weather. Those are the ones that immediately jump out at me,” Hamlin said in the latest episode of his Harmful acts Podcast. “I'm sure there are others, but it seems like those are always the cars that go to the front when these conditions prevail.

“You know, we've seen for some time that the wet weather top ten was very different to the dry weather top ten. So it's a case of, for some people, it suits their style and they get it done.”

With NASCAR trying to keep racing going even in wet weather, it's easy to see why Denny Hamlin has chosen Kyle Larson, Chase Briscoe, Christopher Bell and Chase Elliott as the guys to beat when it rains.

We'll see if they can continue to perform well when Mother Nature surprises them again in the Cup Series.
