Fourth of July Fireworks in Massachusetts: Laws, Fines, Injuries, Statistics

BROCKTON — In Massachusetts, it is illegal for private citizens to use, possess or sell fireworks without a license or permit. Yet that does not stop many people, including some Brockton residents, from setting off fireworks every year on Independence Day, the Fourth of July.

“We have had a number of issues, usually in early July each year, with certain neighborhoods that host fireworks displays, and we are working hard to stop them,” said Brockton Fire Chief Brian Nardelli.

With the Fourth of July weekend fast approaching, Massachusetts State Fire Marshal Jon Davin is stressing the importance of fireworks safety.

“Fireworks are inherently dangerous,” Davine said. “We want everyone to have a safe, happy Fourth of July. Please don't risk a fire, injury or a court date. There are dozens of sanctioned municipal shows throughout Massachusetts this season, so leave fireworks to the professionals.”
