Pilot killed, 5 others injured in car crash at Malmstrom Air Force Base

According to authorities, a pilot was killed and five other soldiers were injured in a car accident at an air force base in Montana on Saturday.

Four soldiers were injured in the first crash at Malmstrom Air Force Base, including the soldier who crashed. Two other soldiers who arrived at the scene of the accident were also injured, the base said in a press release.

The five injured pilots were taken to nearby hospitals. The deceased pilot was pronounced dead at the scene and his identity has not been determined pending notification of his family.

“Each of our Soldiers is amazing and a vital member of our team,” said Col. Dan Voorhies, 341st Missile Squadron commander, in a statement. “We will need time to mourn our lost teammate and for our injured members to heal both physically and mentally.”

“Our focus right now is to ensure that the entire Malmstrom team receives the support it needs to get through this difficult time.”

The cause of the crash is currently being investigated.

The base, built during World War II, is located in Great Falls, about 90 miles from Helena, the state capital.

Elected officials across Montana mourned the loss of the soldier over the weekend.

“Susan and I join the men and women of Malmstrom Air Force Base in mourning the loss of a pilot who was tragically killed in a car accident this weekend,” Montana Governor Greg Gianforte said in a statement.

“I am saddened to hear of the accident at Malmstrom Air Force Base that claimed the life of one of our brave Airmen,” U.S. Senator Jon Tester said in a statement.

“My deepest condolences go out to the Malmstrom community and the families affected. We mourn his loss and pray for a speedy recovery for those injured.”
