NJ History July 1-7

The People's Motorcade, comprised of activists angry with President Donald Trump and his agenda, welcomed the President to his private golf course and club, Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, on Saturday, July 6, 2019.

When Trump returned to the club for the first time this year, he spent a summer retreat there over the holiday weekend after presiding over an Independence Day celebration in Washington, DC.

Here's a look at events that happened in Central Jersey five, ten, 25, 50 and 100 years ago this week.

Five years ago

July 1, 2019: Kevin Hughes, 49, of North Plainfield, the former South Plainfield recreation director who resigned earlier this year, pleaded guilty to one count of theft by unauthorized taking, admitting to stealing more than $80,000 from the department.

2nd July: It was reported that Joel Mercado, 38, of Lyndhurst, a former chief correctional officer at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women in Union Township, was sentenced to three years in prison on Friday, June 28, 2019, for having sexual relations with two inmates.

5th July: An appeals court overturned a state Department of Education ruling that required the parents of a second-grader identified only by their initials and first names, Tom and Mary, to pay $38,329 to reimburse the Bridgewater-Raritan School District for a year's worth of tuition because the district believed the student did not live in the district.

7th of July: When USA TODAY NETWORK New Jersey analyzed U.S. Census data to determine the 50 richest cities in New Jersey, ranked by median household income, Montgomery ranked 7th and Tewksbury ranked 19th.

7th of July: In the final of the FIFA Women's World Cup, the United States women's national team defeated the Netherlands 2-0. New Jersey natives Tobin Heath and Caril Lloyd helped the team successfully defend their title.

7th of July: It was reported that singer-songwriter Gloria Gaynor sold her Green Brook home on Fairway Drive. The home, built in 1988, was listed for sale for $1,395,000.

10 years ago

July 1, 2014: Jonathan R. Parham, who was a Linden police officer for nearly 16 years, was the first black police officer in Linden to reach the rank of captain; and Nancy E. Petroski, a 22-year police veteran, was the first woman in the department to reach the rank of lieutenant.

July 1: About 200 people gathered at Rutgers University in New Brunswick to remember the three murdered Israeli teenagers – Eyal Yifrah, 19, Gilad Shaar, 16, and Naftali Fraenkel, 16 – who had all been missing since Thursday, June 12, 2014, and were found dead on Monday, June 30, 2014.

July 1: In a World Cup soccer match, North Brunswick goalkeeper Tim Howard saved 16 shots—the most at a World Cup in half a century—but the United States lost 2-1 to Belgium.

2nd July: Martha Stewart reportedly spoke to a sold-out crowd of 500 at the 2014 Health Fair at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in the Somerset section of Franklin Township, promoting her new self-help book for people over 40, “Living the Good Long Life,” she told the forum.

4th of July: It was reported that the families of 11 Manville residents who died of asbestos-related cancer were awarded $90.5 million this week in compensation for their pain and suffering. The families had sued two out-of-state companies, Anova Holding and Becon, that sold asbestos to Johns-Manville in Manville.

1999

July 1, 1999: The Piscataway Town Council recognized the following residents for their bravery in rescuing people from a burning airplane on Sunday, May 30, 1999: Thomas and Frank Uhrin, Carol Pennyfeather, Christian Happel, David Peters, Kenneth Burns Sr., Robert Bertelli, Bruce Plath, Hedwig Alberto, David Norton, Edward Rose and Walter Kramer Jr.

3rd of July: Manville celebrated its 70th anniversary with the unveiling of the first county flag, crafted by Duane Potasky, during a ceremony at Manville City Hall.

July 3rd and 4th: The 16th Raritan River Festival, featuring music, food, and vintage car and motorcycle shows, took place at Boyd Park in New Brunswick and Donaldson Park in Highland Park.

4th of July: Milton Kalafer, 83, father of Somerset Patriots owners Steven and Michael Kalafer, died at Morristown Memorial Hospital.

7th of July: The Immaculata American Legion baseball team won its third consecutive Somerset-Warren American Legion game, 6-4, against first-place Hillsborough at Hillsborough High School.

7th of July: A jury acquitted 37-year-old Allan Franklin of capital crimes in the murder of 64-year-old Isiac Warmack, a friend of Franklin's wife Annie, in their Carteret bedroom, and instead found him guilty of felony murder, a less serious charge to manslaughter.

1974

4th of July: “Arms and the Man,” a comedy by George Bernard Shaw, premiered at the Hamilton Murray Theater on the campus of Princeton University.

5th July: Eight homes in East Brunswick were struck by lightning. There were also half a dozen floods in the community.

5th July: Larry Smith, 19, of Glen Rock, Pennsylvania, won the men's division of the Eastern Archery Association Championships in Piscataway.

July 6: Bridgewater police said a 13,000-gallon spill of heating oil entered Sunset Lake on Friday, July 5, 1974, and did not pose a threat to the Elizabethtown Water Co.'s water supply, reports said.

1924

2nd July: It was reported that Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., Assistant Secretary of the Navy, would visit Perth Amboy on Saturday, July 5, 1924, as an official representative of the Navy Department, to receive the USS Newton from Senator Walter E. Edge.

4th of July: Among the 4,000 masked men and women who marched on Monmouth County soil to celebrate the 148th anniversary of American independence in the name of “religious and political freedom” was a large delegation of Ku Klux Klan members from Middlesex County.

4-5 July: The film “The Broken Wing” starring Kenneth Harlan, Miriam Cooper and Walter Long was shown at Reade's Plainfield Theater.

5th July: Danny Williams of Plainfield, who was assistant golf professional at Shackamaxon Country Club in Scotch Plains, broke the course record at Shackamaxon with a score of 65. The previous record was 66, set by Bob Cruickshank, head pro at the Westfield Club.
