Affordable housing costs on the rise in Indiana

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT)- A new report shows that affordable housing in Indiana is becoming less attainable.

Hoosiers now need to made $22 per hour to afford a modest 2-bedroom apartment, a $3 increase from last year. According to Prosperity Indiana, the state’s top 20 occupations paid enough to afford housing 2 years ago, but now less that two thirds can.

“We’re afraid that those housing costs are going to continue to outpace what Hoosier renters can afford, unless Indiana’s federal, state and local policymakers work together to make housing a top priority.” says Andrew Bradley of Prosperity Indiana.

Lieutenant Governor, Suzanne Crouch and the Indiana Housing Community Development Authority recently announced that $11 million will be going towards 8 affordable housing projects. Indiana currently ranks as the 34th least affordable state in the country.
