305,000 vehicles in Florida still on the road with defective Takata airbags

ORLANDO, Florida. – The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that ten years after the original recall, more than 6.4 million vehicles in the United States still have unrepaired or “unrepaired” Takata airbags.

Carfax Editor-in-Chief Patrick Olson asked NHTSA about the 10-year update.

Much to our surprise, in Florida, one of nine states in Zone A, there are 305,000 vehicles on the road with unrepaired Takata airbags.

The states in Zone A “pose the greatest safety risk” due to their high heat and humidity. These include Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas.

According to NHTSA, the airbags in 56,000 vehicles in Orlando alone are still unrepaired.

“These are not junk or wrecked cars,” Olson told News 6. “These are cars that are still drivable and need their airbags replaced.”

According to Carfax, “Prolonged exposure to heat and humidity can cause Takata air bag inflators to inflate far more violently than expected.”

According to NHTSA, 27 people in the United States have been killed and at least 400 injured by these airbags. More than 67 million airbags in over 40 million vehicles from 19 automakers have been recalled.

“Anyone who owns a car with an unrepaired Takata airbag is taking a real safety risk,” Olson told News 6. “That means there are a lot of people in your neighborhood driving around you or near you with these unrepaired cars.”

The affected vehicles come from Korea, Japan, the USA and Europe. According to Olson, this is “a global problem”.

Consumers who want to check if their vehicle has an unresolved recall can simply visit Carfax.com/recall.

“Enter your vehicle identification number (VIN) or even just your license plate information,” Olson said. “We'll tell you immediately, at no cost, if your car has an unresolved recall.”

Olson told News 6 that the parts shortage we experienced in 2014 is no longer a problem.

“First, call your dealer and make sure they have the parts in stock,” Olson said. “But the automakers have them, so the dealers should be able to get them easily. It'll take you an hour, maybe two hours, and it won't cost you a dime.”

If you want to make sure your current vehicle is free from recalls in the future, you can use the Carfax Car Care app. Download the app, register your vehicle, and you'll receive recall updates “for as long as you own your vehicle.”
