Massachusetts resident stole $21,000 and was ordered to pay “special agents,” police say

A Massachusetts resident lost nearly $21,000 after being told he had to reinstate his account, Blackstone police said.

The person received a message on their tablet telling them to call customer service. While on the phone with the supposed customer service line, they were told that their account had been hacked “and that they needed to withdraw as much money as possible to get their account back,” police said.

The person on the phone then told him to meet with a “special agent” to pay the money, police said.

They set the time and withdrew about $21,000 from their account.

But the Massachusetts resident had a different opinion and called the police at around 7:52 a.m. on Friday.

Police set up surveillance at the location where the resident and the caller planned to meet and then arrested a 37-year-old man, police said, adding that the Massachusetts resident did not lose any money.

The police did not disclose the name of the 37-year-old.

He was charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, namely theft by false pretenses, attempt to commit a crime, namely theft by false pretenses, attempt to commit a crime, namely theft from a person, and attempt to commit a crime, namely elder abuse by financial exploitation.

The 37-year-old is due to appear before Uxbridge District Court on Monday.
