Storms over the weekend toppled trees and caused power outages in parts of Maine

Permission for the sidebar? Perfect, thanks.

Before we dive into the chaos that plagued parts of Maine over the weekend, let me first tell you that I played the weather lottery this weekend and totally won?

So a few weeks ago we decided to plan a trip to Funtown Splashtown USA, “where the big American family comes together to play,” for the last Sunday in June. Well, as the day approached, we realized that the weather actually didn't look so great.

The detailed weather forecast predicted intermittent thunderstorms throughout the day. But we decided not to change the date and take the risk. We are glad we did. We were able to enjoy the park all day until closing time and it didn't rain until we drove home.

It also seemed like a lot of other people had changed their plans because the park was more empty than it had been in 30 years. We didn't have to wait in line all day. It was amazing!

Okay, thanks for the sidebar.

According to an article from WGME 13, not everyone has been spared from the severe storms forecast for the region on Sunday. The news station reports that parts of western Maine, including Fryeburg, were hit by heavy rains and winds yesterday.

Several streets in the city of Fryeburg were closed Sunday afternoon due to fallen trees. In addition, falling trees took down several sections of power lines, requiring line crews to step in and restore power.

Fryeburg resident Jon Tibbetts told WGME about the storm damage,

“The forest left a swath of trees that ran from the fields to here and across the road. If you look up these people's driveway, you can see that one tree has been completely blown over,”

A good piece of advice: Pay attention to storm warnings from local meteorologists, because you never know how bad it could get outside.
