More than 30 Massachusetts beaches closed ahead of July 4 – Boston 25 News

QUINCY, Massachusetts – More than 30 beaches in Massachusetts will be closed to swimmers on the Monday before Independence Day on July 4th due to concerns about bacteria.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health's interactive beach water quality dashboard, 31 beaches, lakes and ponds were closed as of Monday morning, including popular destinations on Cape Cod and the islands.

Almost all of these waters are closed due to the levels of harmful bacteria, the dashboard said.

The dashboard is updated daily at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. during the beach season.

Water quality at Massachusetts beaches must be monitored. This monitoring data helps local health officials decide when to close a beach due to unsafe conditions and informs the public so beachgoers can make informed decisions about swimming at the beach.

Swimming in unsafe waters can cause gastrointestinal and respiratory problems.

The state conducts weekly water quality tests at the beginning of each week from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Below you can see the current list of active closures displayed in the dashboard:
