The “Great Race” stops in Maine

If you were driving around the Gardiner area yesterday, you might have seen a lot of cool vintage cars. The reason? The incredible Great Race was in town!

It was a historic day in downtown Gardiner as thousands of people gathered to witness the finish of the Great Race!

According to the website, the race was an epic 2,300-mile journey that began in Owensboro, Kentucky on June 22. Over 120 antique and classic cars, including 10 from Maine, crossed the finish line in style on Sunday, June 30.

The streets of Gardiner came to life as local vintage and antique cars drove through downtown, followed by the Great Racers.

Professional photographer Dave Dostie was able to capture the event.

According to Great Race, the winner will be crowned Grand Champion of the 2024 Hemmings Motor News Great Race presented by Coker Tire and will receive a whopping $50,000. This year's winner was Howard and Doug Sharp.

You can view the full race map here.

According to Central Maine,

“The race has a different route every year. This year the classic cars drove from the start in Kentucky through Ohio, New York and the states in between to Gardiner. The vehicles spent the weekend in Maine, reached Freeport and Owls Head before reaching the finish line on Sunday.”

This race is not about speed or being the first to reach the finish line, it's about the journey, navigating the routes to get to your final destination. There are checkpoints and I'm telling you, these vehicles are not like the ones you drive today.

One participant said that the secret of the Great Race is that you have to be good at math,

“They may tell you to drive 30 miles per hour to the stop sign and then when you get to the sign, reduce your speed to 17 miles per hour. These cars don't have an analog clock or an analog speedometer, so you have to know exactly where on the speedometer it says 18 or 12,”
