New police phone scam making the rounds in Maine

Calling all Maine residents: There is a new scam going around affecting the justice system. These hackers will try anything to get their hands on your money.

So here is the latest dilemma…

The Somerset County Sheriff's Office is trying to inform Maine residents about this new scam currently going around. It is a phone scam in which a caller pretends to be a police officer or detective.

According to an article from WMTW, there are reports of people receiving calls from a man claiming to be “Detective Keith McCoy.”

Okay, I give them points for a pretty cool fake detective name.

According to Sheriff Dale Lancaster, this scam appears to be targeting registered sex offenders. The fake detective will ask for payments over the phone for alleged fines, bail bonds or the cancellation of arrest warrants.

Aside from the fact that there are no detectives named Keith McCoy in Somerset Country, Sheriff Lancaster stresses that police officers would never call you to ask for money.

The Federal Trade Commission has released a report explaining how to avoid scams and the signs that hackers are trying to steal your money. Recognizing the signs will help you avoid getting caught up in their crimes. You can see the list here.

I understand that this may seem believable, especially if you are a frequent flyer who has had a history of run-ins with the law. However, always be cautious and investigate if someone calls you claiming to be from the police and demanding money. Remember, law enforcement or detectives will never ask for payment over the phone.

Maine residents are urged to exercise caution and report such calls to authorities immediately.
