Increased risk of severe thunderstorms across North Dakota

There is a possible Category 2 threat for severe thunderstorms in southern North Dakota today and tonight (Monday, July 1, 2024).

There could be more than just fireworks in the skies over Bismarck Mandan tonight, according to the Storm Prediction Center and the National Weather Service. Here's a look at the map.

As you can see on the map above, south-central and southeastern North Dakota are affected by possible severe weather this evening.

This includes most of our broadcast areas in south central and parts of southwestern North Dakota.

The timing and impact of today’s possible severe weather event:

Thunderstorms will continue this morning, primarily in northern and northeastern North Dakota. Thunderstorms will again form in western North Dakota this afternoon and early evening and spread across the state.

Isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms are possible across the state, with large hail up to the size of ping pong balls and damaging winds up to 60 mph. Early evening is the most likely time we can expect severe weather in the Capital Region.

The rest of the week of July 4 is also likely to remain unstable.

This week's weather forecast calls for showers or thunderstorms each day. Unfortunately, the next best chance of significant precipitation for Bismarck Mandan is on Thursday, July 4, with an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms that could overshadow your Independence Day celebrations.

The long-term forecast indicates warmer and drier conditions for the coming week.

While many of the cities listed immediately catch the casual observer's eye as popular summer rental destinations—Branson in the Ozarks, Missouri, or Lake Havasu in Arizona—you might be surprised when you delve deeper into the quality-of-life offerings beyond the beach and vacation homes. You'll likely take home a bit of a wide range of American culture: one of the last remaining 1950s-style drive-in theaters in the Midwest; a Florida town that began as a retirement home for Civil War veterans; an island with some of the country's best public schools and wealthiest cities in the middle of a lake between Seattle and Bellevue; and even a California city with a lot more to offer than Johnny Cash's prison blues.
