Prosecutors in Massachusetts want to retry Karen Read case after mistrial

DEDHAM – Just minutes after a judge declared a mistrial in the Karen Read murder case Due to the jury deadlock, prosecutors in Massachusetts announced their next course of action.

“The Commonwealth intends to retry the case,” Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey said in a statement.

When will Karen Read be in court again?

Judge Beverly Cannone has scheduled a status conference for July 22 at 2 p.m. in Norfolk Superior Court. Read is scheduled to appear in person with her attorney, David Yannetti.

It could take several months or even more than a year for a new trial to take place, legal expert Jennifer Roman previously told WBZ-TV. She said it could be difficult to hold a trial in a place where so many people have already made their decision.

“If this case has to be retried, we're going to go back to the same group of people, the same jury pool from Norfolk County, and we're going to have to try again to find a subset of people who really know nothing about this case. That's going to be extraordinarily difficult,” Roman said.

What was Karen Read accused of?

Read was charged of hitting her boyfriend John O'Keefe, a Boston police officer, with her SUV and leaving him to die in the snow in Canton, Massachusetts, in January 2022.

The 44-year-old from Mansfield was charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter while under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of a crime causing bodily injury and death. If convicted of murder, Read faces life in prison with the possibility of parole.
