Robert Redford's wife, artist Sybille Szaggars, sells her cabin in Utah for $3.99 million

A luxury mountain cabin near Sundance, Utah, owned by visual artist Sibylle Szaggars Redford, wife of actor Robert Redford, went up for sale Monday for $3.99 million, Mansion Global has learned.

The three-story home on Balsam Drive is surrounded by Rocky Mountain pines, fresh mountain air and spectacular views of Mount Timpanogos. Inside, the home is all about a triple-height living room with a wall of windows overlooking the pristine landscape, blurring the line between indoors and out.

Szaggars Redford bought the house in the 1980s before she met the Hollywood star at the Sundance Resort just a mile away. The actor owns the resort that later spawned the Sundance Film Festival.

In 1968, Redford had purchased a ski resort called Timp Haven on the slopes of Mount Timpanogos and later renamed it Sundance after his role in the Oscar-winning 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, a role that remained his favorite even after decades in the industry.

In the years since Szaggars Redford bought the house, it has become a sanctuary for her, serving as inspiration for much of her art and as an impetus for her conservation work, says Jaisa Bishop, a broker with Windermere Real Estate/Luxury Portfolio International who is marketing the property.

“She has continually used it for inspiration and as a place to recharge over the years,” Bishop said.

Situated on 1.43 acres, the home features four bedrooms, multiple decks with views in different directions, and a lower level guest suite with its own kitchenette, living area, and private deck overlooking the pines.

Szaggars Redford, who could not immediately be reached for comment, used the lower floor as an art studio and work space, but according to Bishop, she has recently spent most of her time in Northern California, where the couple has their primary residence.

“It fostered her love of nature, which you can see in many of the pieces scattered throughout the house,” Bishop said. Some of the works depict nearby Provo Peak as well as Mount Timpanogos.

Many other works were inspired by the ever-present natural beauty that surrounds the home. Wood paneling inside emphasizes the home's relationship with nature, while a cantilevered hallway over the high-ceilinged living room and large stone fireplace provide space inside to watch the seasons change, from snow-covered slopes to lush green pines to a riot of color in the fall.

“It’s a wonderful place for everyone to create,” Bishop said.

Szaggars Redford is also the founder and artistic director of The Way of The Rain, a nonprofit organization that addresses climate change through multidisciplinary and performing arts. She was inspired by her previous work in which she incorporated the monsoon rains of the American Southwest into her paintings, letting the rain transform a prepared watercolor painting—a process she recorded and then shared as an art form in its own right.

She and Redford met in the '90s but married in 2009 and have been together ever since. Both love Utah but appear to be leaving the state behind. Redford sold the Sundance Resort in 2020 and a nearby horse ranch a year later, dubbed Horse Whisper Ranch after the 1998 film “The Horse Whisperer,” which he directed and starred in, Forbes reported. It appears the Redfords also own another ranch in Utah, the publication said.
