BOISE – The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) turns 50 today, celebrating half a century of connecting Idaho travelers to their many destinations.

On July 1, 1974, the Idaho Transportation Department was officially established, combining the Department of Highways, Aviation, Public Transportation, and the Transportation Safety Commission into one department.

This change in administration triggered a number of changes, including the appointment of Darrell Manning, the ITD's first director, who served as ITD director from 1974 to 1985.

Today, the department maintains and operates the major arteries, bridges and runways in Idaho's hinterland.

“ITD has been serving the citizens of Idaho for well over 50 years, but we feel it is important to recognize this date and its significance,” said Director Scott Stokes. “On this day, ITD expanded its essential responsibilities as a department to include the maintenance of our runways, public transit and traffic safety – all things that help improve the quality of life in our great state.”
