Utah fires coach Amy Rodriguez as part of organizational restructuring in a difficult season

SANDY, Utah (AP) — Amy Rodriguez, the new coach of the Utah Royals, has been fired after less than one season at the helm of the revived NWSL club.

Sunday's move was part of an organizational shakeup for a struggling team that ranks last in the league with a 2-11-2 record.

Rodriguez, a former member of the U.S. national team, is the Royals' all-time leading scorer with 16 goals in her career when she played there from 2018 to 2020.

Along with Rodriguez, the Royals also fired goaltending coach Maryse Bard-Martel and announced that team president Michelle Hyncik will take on a new legal role with the Blitzer family office.

Jimmy Coenraets was named interim coach of Utah.

Real Salt Lake President John Kimball will oversee the Royals' operations while the search for a new club president takes place. He thanked Rodriguez, Bard-Martel and Hyncik for their efforts.

“While we have faced adversity this season, we are focused on building a team on and off the field that can compete at the highest level for years to come,” he said in a statement.

Utah plays in Seattle on Sunday.

The Royals played in the NWSL from 2018 to 2020 before ceasing operations. Real Salt Lake owners Ryan Smith and David Blitzer re-established the team this season.
