Florida man accused of hitting girlfriend with vodka funnel swims to island to escape authorities

A Florida man learned that while he could escape, he could not hide from law enforcement when police found him hiding in a tent on an island after his girlfriend accused him of beating her up.

According to Port Orange police, Jeriel Joiner hit his girlfriend with a bottle of vodka and strangled her by putting his hands around her throat.

According to police, Joiner continued to strangle the victim by wrapping a rope around her neck. She also reportedly broke an arm in the incident.

According to police, passersby saw Joiner hurting his girlfriend and intervened to stop him from causing more harm, temporarily pinning him to the ground.

According to police, Joiner then ran away and swam to an island in the Intracoastal Waterway.

In a bodycam video, a Port Orange Police Department officer can be heard telling FWC officers that Joiner had called police earlier and said he had “beat up his old lady. Come get me.”

Police said they found Jeriel Joiner hiding in a tent on an island in the Intracoastal Waterway.

The officer further explained that the POPD could not find Joiner because he was on the island.

The video shows officers approaching a tent and telling the resident that they are police and that he must show them his hands.

They then order Joiner to roll out of the tent and kneel down so they can handcuff him.

Joiner was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, domestic violence by strangulation, and aggravated assault.
