Police baton used in brutal attack on road, police say

A Massachusetts man was arrested over the weekend in connection with a brutal road rage fight in which investigators say he used a metal police baton. Gregory Knowles, 51, of Hingham, faces charges including assault with a dangerous weapon, strangulation, battery and witness intimidation. According to police, the 34-year-old victim called 911 to report the road rage incident around 11 p.m. on Route 3A near Sohier Street in Cohasset. “The victim alleged that the driver of the Jeep stopped in front of him, got out with a metal extendable police baton and began striking and strangling him on the head and body before fleeing the scene,” Cohasset police said in a statement. “The victim wrote down a license plate number while the Jeep fled.” Police said the victim suffered visible injuries but declined medical treatment at the scene. Officers arrested Knowles at his home and towed his 2006 Jeep back to Cohasset Police Headquarters. After obtaining a search warrant, police found the extendable metal baton in the Jeep. Knowles was scheduled to be arraigned in Quincy District Court on Monday, but the judge ordered a diversion under a state law affecting veterans. His next court date is scheduled for Aug. 12.
