Tallahassee Florida Temple Dedication and Open House Dates Set – Church News

The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced the dates for the dedication and open house of the Tallahassee Florida Temple.

Elder Patrick Kearon of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles will dedicate the Tallahassee Florida Temple on Sunday, December 8, 2024. The two dedicatory sessions—at 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time—will be broadcast to all units in the new temple district.

Additional details regarding the dedication and open house will be announced later. The dedication and open house dates were first posted on ChurchofJesusChrist.org on Monday, July 1.

The Tallahassee Temple will be the Church's third Lord's House in the state, following the Orlando Florida Temple, dedicated in 1994, and the Fort Lauderdale Florida Temple, dedicated in 2014.

After 30 years of operation, the Orlando Temple will close this month for extensive renovations announced in February of this year.

Two more temples for Florida – in Tampa and Jacksonville – have been announced and have been in planning since 2022, with sites approved for both.

Prior to its dedication, the Tallahassee Florida Temple will be open to media, invited guests, and public tours. A media day is planned for Monday, October 28, and invited guests will be able to tour the temple on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 29 and 30.

A public open day will be held from Monday 4 November to Saturday 23 November (excluding Sundays).

The one-story, 30,000-square-foot temple was built on a 4.5-acre lot at 2440 Papillon Way in northeast Tallahassee, the largest city in the Florida Panhandle and the state capital. In addition to an existing church meetinghouse, the temple grounds also include a distribution center.

The Tallahassee Florida Temple was announced by President Russell M. Nelson on April 5, 2020, and was one of eight new temples named in the closing session of general conference in April 2020. The location and exterior view were released on January 12, 2021.

Construction of the Tallahassee Temple followed the groundbreaking ceremony on June 5, 2021. Elder James B. Martino, then a General Authority Seventy and president of the Church’s North America Southeast Area, presided over the event and offered a prayer for the site and the construction process.

Tallahassee is currently located in the Orlando Temple District, with the temple approximately 260 miles away.

The first missionaries came to Florida in 1845, and the church's first congregation was established in the Big Bend region of northern Florida in 1847. Today, more than 172,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints live in nearly 275 congregations in the state.
