Don't share these grilled foods with our Maine Coonhounds

As a dog owner of two sweet beggars, I completely understand that it's almost impossible NOT to share our food with our pets, especially when they stare at you like that. On the rare occasions I order from Taco Bell, our Australian Shepherd mix ends up getting most of the order because I can't resist his cute looks. He was also a street dog found in a garbage can. His 16-year-old digestive system can handle anything.

Our retriever, on the other hand, has a very sensitive stomach, so we have to be extra careful about what he eats, especially during holidays where there are usually lots of snacks and food, like the upcoming Fourth of July.

Here are grilled foods that are NOT safe to share with your Maine Coonhound

This list will seriously ruin your dog's day, BUT it will also prevent the wrong kind… fireworks.

Who would know this better than the American Kennel Club? The safety of dogs is their calling.

1.) Avoid meat with bones. This seems obvious, but do your kids know when they come to visit not to give Daisy any of their chicken wings?

2.) Be careful with garnishes and spices! Garlic and onions can be poisonous to dogs. (What are they, vampires?)

3.) SALT! Too much salt can be toxic to dogs and lead to death.

4.) Alcohol – as if you were going to share the red, white and blue margarita anyway.

5.) Licking and eating fatty meat can lead to pancreatitis.

6.) Chocolate and ice cream. Both can make your dog very sick.

7.) This was the most shocking thing for me, but hot dogs?! They're called “dogs,” but are they not safe for dogs?! Too many hot dogs these days are seasoned (like the garlic and onions mentioned above) and usually contain carcinogenic ingredients. Don't feed them to dogs, but humans should eat three of them – or better yet, four for their fourth birthday!

Ultimately, you know your dog and what he can handle. Please don't consider this article as expert advice, just a reminder to be cautious. Here is another link to help you keep your dog safe at your 4th of July BBQ!
