Georgia family dies in plane crash in New York

According to state police, the family from Georgia was attending a baseball tournament in Cooperstown, New York.

MILTON, Georgia – A Milton middle school student was killed along with his parents, grandfather and brother in a plane crash in New York over the weekend, the Milton football community announced on its social media pages Monday.

The family from Georgia was attending a baseball tournament in Cooperstown, New York, according to state police. On Sunday afternoon, police were called to a possible plane crash in the area of ​​Lake Cecil Road in the town of Masonville.

After a multi-agency search of the area, a Piper Malibu Mirage was located, but none of the passengers survived, according to a press release. The plane had taken off from Alfred S. Nader Regional Airport in Oneonta, New York, and was en route to West Virginia to refuel before returning to Georgia.

Deceased family members include 76-year-old Roger Beggs, 43-year-old Laura Van Epps, 42-year-old Ryan Van Epps, 12-year-old James Ryan Van Epps and 10-year-old Harrison Van Epps.


Since the tragic accident became known, people on social media have been sharing memories of the family and expressing their condolences to their loved ones.

The Milton Eagles football team was one of those contributions. The team said that James Van Epps was an aspiring 7th grade football player. It also said that his mother, father, grandfather and brother also died in the plane crash.

James and his family also have ties to King's Ridge Christian School in Alpharetta. Chase Crawford, who coached there, expressed how fortunate he felt to have been close to the family, even if only for a short time.

The Van Epps family also has ties to the Ninth Inning Baseball program in metro Atlanta, and the organization sent its condolences to the family on Facebook Monday evening.

Family member Ansley Van Epps told 11Alive that they are still processing the tragedy but are grateful for the support they have received from the community.

“We are still processing the tragic loss of our family and the Beggs and are all devastated to say the least. We are deeply grieving and heartbroken,” she said. “Just know that we are grateful for the love that has been shown to us during this difficult time.”

In a statement, the family also said that as they struggle with loss, they come together to celebrate the wonderful life they have led.

“Her kindness, laughter and love will remain in our hearts forever,” the statement said. “Please keep her loved ones and our family in mind and pray for them during this incredibly difficult time. May we find strength and comfort in the memories and love of all who knew her.”
