Michigan State rising junior Ozan Baris loses in first round of Cranbrook Tennis Classic

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. (WILX) – Michigan State rising junior tennis player Ozan Baris hasn’t officially made a decision regarding his tennis future at MSU.

In the meantime, Baris, who lost in this year’s NCAA Singles semifinals, lost his most recent professional tournament Monday 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round of the Cranbrook Tennis Classic, part of the ATP Challenger Tour.

Baris lost to world No. 247 Ethan Quinn, which was the national singles champion in 2023 after capturing the title a member of Georgia’s tennis team.

The Okemos native was the first to say he didn’t have his stuff Monday, but even in a loss, as painful as they are, come lessons about the level required to compete at the professional level.

“More than anything, just trying to get used to it more and more to these level of players and this level of tennis,” Baris said. “Obviously, yeah, still not there. But the more and more I play against guys like that, I think the more I’ll get used to it.”

As for what’s next, Baris doesn’t know past the tournament in Bloomfield Hills.

Baris is playing in Tuesday’s doubles competition with Stanford’s Nishesh Basavareddy, playing in their first doubles match together since winning the 2022 U.S. Junior Open doubles title.
