Arrest made in connection with the murder of a pregnant South Carolina teenager

62-year-old woman charged with double murder …

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has announced an arrest in connection with the murder of a pregnant 17-year-old woman from Barnwell, SC

Jacqueline Reid62, of Barnwell, SC, was arrested Monday (July 1, 2024) and charged with two counts of murder. Mayla Hogg and her unborn daughter. Hogg's labor was scheduled to be induced on February 13, 2024. She wanted to name her daughter London Charity after her late mother.

However, these plans came to a violent end.

Hogg was reported missing on February 14, 2024. Four days later, her body was discovered in a ditch near Perry Street in Barnwell County. The investigation into her death was initially handled by the Barnwell Police Department (BPD) before being handed over to SLED.

According to arrest warrants attached to the press release, Hogg was last seen near Reid's residence on February 8, 2024. According to the warrants, Reid is accused of stabbing Hogg multiple times with a sharp weapon.

At the same time, the BPD was investigating the disappearance and murder of Hogg and was also investigating the disappearance of 37-year-old Michael Still from the same apartment complex. Although many believed the two cases were connected, the Barnwell County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) issued a statement saying there was “no concrete evidence” that the two cases were connected.

Still's vehicle was found in the parking lot and his glasses were found in his apartment. Despite intensive search efforts, he has not been located at the time of this writing.

“No matter where you live, no matter where you come from, everyone in this state is entitled to the same quality of law enforcement,” said SLED chief Mark Keel in a rare public statement. “Every case is important and every victim deserves justice.”

Reid was booked into the Barnwell County Detention Center on Monday afternoon and her first court date is scheduled for August 26, 2024. The case is being prosecuted by the South Carolina Second District Attorney's Office.

Like everyone charged with a crime, Reid is presumed innocent until proven guilty by our criminal justice system – or until she enters into some form of contest as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors to any of the charges against her.
