The poll found that 81% of those who watched the debate said it would not affect their voting decision in November. So the trend may have started before the end of last week. "I think people are very partisan," Levesque said. "So they're in their camps saying, 'Well, I watched the debate, but it doesn't affect how I'm going to vote.' But events like a presidential debate like last week's are certainly turning points in politics, and given the many changes we've seen in the presidential election, the debate certainly had an impact." One of the quirks of this election cycle is underscored by the fact that voters have a poor opinion of both likely candidates. The poll found that 42% of voters have a favorable opinion of Trump, compared to 57% with an unfavorable opinion. Thirty-nine percent of voters have a favorable opinion of Biden, while 59 percent have an unfavorable opinion of the candidate. The poll continues to be a rough patch for Biden, but Levesque said it looks like Biden still has a relatively tight grip on most Democratic voters. "67 percent of people who describe themselves as very liberal are for him," Levesque said. "That's a weak number, but in the end, a lot of those people are going to go out and vote for him, even if they're holding their noses while doing it."

“I think it's now clear that New Hampshire is a really competitive state in the presidential election,” said Neil Levesque of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics.

The results show a significant swing since the last Saint Anselm College poll in December, which showed Biden with a 10 percentage point lead.

Among voters who knew about the debate, 54% said Trump won, while only 6% said Biden won and 39% said there was no winner. The poll found that 81% of those who watched the debate said it would not affect their vote in November, so the trend may have started before the end of last week.

But events like a presidential debate like last week's are turning points in politics, and given the many changes we've seen in the presidential campaign, the debate certainly had an impact.”

One of the peculiarities of this election cycle is highlighted by the fact that voters have a poor opinion of both likely candidates. The poll found that 42% of voters have a positive opinion of Trump, while 57% have an unfavorable opinion. Biden has a positive opinion of 39% of voters, while 59% have an unfavorable opinion of him.

The poll continues a difficult period for Biden, but Levesque said it looks like Biden still has a relatively firm grip on the majority of Democratic voters.

“Sixty-seven percent of people who describe themselves as very liberal support him,” Levesque said. “That's a weak number, but in the end, many of those people will go out and vote for him, even if they hold their noses.”
