Hiking trail renamed in honor of former Montana union leader

HELENA – More than 50 people gathered on Helena’s Upper West Side on Monday, July 1, 2024, to help dedicate a new walking path to the late Helena City Councilman Eric Feaver.

The trail is located directly on LeGrande Cannon Boulevard near the Grant Street intersection.

In 2023, commissioners voted to rename a section of the Mike Cormier Trail in honor of Feaver after a section of the trail had to be relocated to maintain public access.

At the ceremony, Feaver was honored for his service and love of Helena's open lands and trails.

“He loved the trails,” said Ellen Feaver. “Nobody used the trail system more than Eric; every month of the year, almost every day of every month of the year.”

Feaver served as president of the Montana Public Employees Union for 36 years before retiring in 2020. In 2021, he ran for a seat on the city commission and won.

He served on the Commission for about six months before his unexpected death in June 2022.

Feaver's family was present at the inauguration.

At Monday's ceremony, Feaver's widow Ellen said naming a trail after Eric was the perfect way to honor him and his contributions to Montana and Helena.

The city also renamed the intersection of Eric Feaver Trail, Ambrose Trail and Quarry Trail “Feaver's Union” to honor his work with the Montana Federation of Public Employees.
