Voters kick all Republican women out of South Carolina Senate | Archive

COLUMBIA, SC — The only three Republican women in the South Carolina Senate last year defied their party and blocked a complete ban on abortion in their state. Voters in the Republican primary have now thrown out all of their party's “sister senators.” The election result means there will likely be no women in the Senate's majority party when the next session begins in 2025. Barring a major upset in the November election, only two women, both Democrats, are likely to sit in the 46-member Senate, the lowest of any U.S. state.

The only three Republican women in the South Carolina Senate fought against their party to prevent the passage of a total abortion ban in their state last year, and lost their jobs in return.
