Fourth of July Fireworks in Southern California: Where to See It

Californians looking to enjoy fireworks on the Fourth of July have numerous options on Thursday, depending on where they live.

Although fireworks are illegal in the city of Los Angeles, no matter what the neighbors down the street do or say, there are about 300 cities across the state that allow the sale and possession of legal fireworks that meet the State Fire Marshal's “safe and sane” seal of approval.

The full list of cities can be found here.

Depending on your location, certain time restrictions may apply, so anyone planning to set off fireworks should contact their local fire department for full information. Dry brush and other flammable materials can ignite with the right sparks, and children should never handle fireworks without parental supervision, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Anyone caught violating state fireworks regulations faces a fine of up to $50,000, up to one year in prison, or both, according to Cal Fire.

For anyone who wants to legally set off a firework or two during the holidays, the agency has further advice:

  • Do not place any part of your body over a firework after the fuse is lit.
  • Back off! Step back after setting off fireworks
  • Do not point lit fireworks at other people.
  • Do not experiment or attempt to re-light fireworks.
  • Do not wear loose clothing
  • Never carry fireworks in your pocket

While dogs, cats and other pets may not be so keen on this summer tradition, here is a list of the fireworks displays that will be seen in Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties on Thursday. Before you go, check with each venue for any last-minute changes or cancellations.
