A REVIEW — NO. 60 RICK WARREN

Since it is the Day 60 until the kickoff between the Lobos and Wildcats, the best player to wear No. 60 for Arizona is Left Guard Rick Warrenwho played with the program from 1989 to 1990. He helped Dick Tomey's “Fumblerooskie” game famous in 1990. Arizona defeated the 15-point favorite USC and the former coach Larry Smith 35-26 at the LA Coliseum after a 17-7 deficit was overcome by three touchdown runs by the quarterback Ronald Kalb in the second half, one of which was set up by Warren's 28-yard run on the fumblerooskie. This is a play where the ball stays on the turf, the defense is fooled, and the guard picks it up and runs. Veal dropped the snap to the ground behind the center Paul Tofflemire and faked an option play to the left. Warren grabbed the ball in the scrum and took off down the right side for a 28-yard run to the USC 3. The play begins at 2:05:30 of the video above. “It's ancient,” UA coach Dick Tomey said of the fumblerooski in the LA Times, “but you have to have the guts to use it.” It was the third time this season the Wildcats used the play, which was banned by the NCAA after the 1992 season. Warren scored a 24-yard touchdown rumble after a fumblerooski in a 28-16 upset win over No. 11 Illinois (coached by John Mackovic) in the season opener. “It's called a 13 fumblerooski,” Warren told the LA Times about the play against USC. “Thirteen is our option play on the left. On the 13 fumblerooski, everyone else goes left and I go right.” Warren was a 1988 walk-on from Taft (Calif.) Junior College and Pittsburg (Kan.) State. He received a scholarship before the start of the 1989 season. Warren later became a real estate investor in the Atlanta area.

No. 60 in 2024 – OL ALEXANDER DOOST

Alexander Doost

Doost, 6-foot-4 and 295 pounds, is a transfer from Northwestern who joined the Wildcats before spring practice. He did not play in the 2023 season at Northwestern after graduating from Mountain Ridge High School in Phoenix. He was a four-year varsity letterwinner at Mountain Ridge. He was the 95th-best offensive lineman in the country and the 18th-ranked recruit in the state of Arizona, according to the 247 Sports Class of 2023 rankings.

NOTE

As is typical in the Big 12's preseason poll, Arizona is projected to finish fifth in the media poll released Tuesday in its first year in the conference. Utah is No. 1, followed by Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Arizona and then Iowa State in the top six. Arizona plays only Utah of those six teams in a conference game. The game against Kansas State in Week 3 is a nonconference game that was scheduled when Arizona was in the Pac-12. Colorado is projected as the 11th-best team and Arizona State is last at No. 16.

THEY SAID IT

“Definitely not before the game, but at the beginning of the week, the D-Line will come together and have some celebrations. This was not planned. It came out of nowhere. I've definitely seen a lot of JJ Watt before and this is kind of a JJ Watt celebration.” — Arizona defensive lineman Ta'ita'i Uiagalelei and addresses his dances after sacks or tackles, especially the one in the video from last season at Mississippi State.
