The New Jersey Devils welcome back Tomas Tatar

The New Jersey Devils signed free agent forward Tomas Tatar to a one-year deal on Tuesday, the team announced, marking the veteran's return to the club he played for from 2021 to 2023.

The deal is worth $1.8 million and Tatar, 33, will likely play a second or third line position in New Jersey after playing for the Colorado Avalanche and Seattle Kraken last season.

In 2023, Tatar led the Devils to the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 2018. In two seasons with the club, he scored 35 goals and 78 points in 158 games. Overall, he has scored 15 or more goals in nine NHL seasons and reached the 20-goal mark seven times.

Last summer, after the Devils let him become a free agent, he agreed to a contract with Colorado but struggled to score with the high-flying Avalanche, scoring just one goal in 27 games and averaging 11:16 minutes of ice time. In Seattle, he found his chemistry, scoring eight goals in 43 games with the Kraken and increasing his average ice time to 13:11.

He played over 15 minutes per game for most of his career and scored a career-high 25 goals with the Detroit Red Wings in the 2016-17 season. Tatar was part of two teams that made it to the Stanley Cup Final: the 2018 Vegas Golden Knights and the 2021 Montreal Canadiens.
