Oregon and California pass fireworks regulations; California violators face $50,000 fine | Top Stories

OREGON AND CALIFORNIA – With July 4 in mind, authorities in Oregon and California have implemented restrictions to keep people safe.

Below are the restrictions that make fireworks legal and illegal in both states — and the penalties residents face if they violate those restrictions.

Oregon

  • Legal Fireworks: fountains, glitter sparklers and ground spinners
  • Illegal Fireworks: firecrackers, bottle rockets, Roman candles, grenades, projectiles and rockets, silver salutes, cherry bombs and M-80s.
  • Violations: Fines of up to $2,500 per violation and a civil penalty of up to $500.

Fireworks that are shot into the air, explode, or behave unpredictably are illegal. If fireworks you or your child use cause damage, you may be liable for the cost of fighting the fire. Fire danger is already “high” in Jackson, Josephine, Klamath, and Lake counties and “moderate” in Curry County.

California

  • Legal Fireworks: Fireworks are legal if they are marked “Safe and Sane” and are set off in designated locations.
  • Illegal Fireworks: rockets, bottle rockets, firecrackers, grenades, bangers, sparklers and other exploding fireworks.
  • Violations: Fine of up to $50,000 and up to one year in prison.

In Siskiyou County, fireworks are not allowed in unincorporated areas.
