Jonathan Isaac agrees to work with Magic, AP source says

ORLANDO, Fla. – Jonathan Isaac has agreed to an $84 million contract that will keep him in Orlando for five more seasons, a person familiar with the negotiations said Tuesday.

What you need to know

  • According to an AP source, Jonathan Isaac has agreed to an $84 million deal that will keep him in Orlando for five more seasons.
  • It is another success story for Isaac, whose career seemed to be in danger a few years ago because he had to take a two-and-a-half-year break due to injuries.
  • Last season, Isaac averaged 6.8 points on 51% shooting and played in 58 games – 13 more than in the previous four seasons combined.

Isaac has agreed to renegotiate the final year of his current contract as well as an extension, said the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the new deal cannot be finalized before the league's offseason moratorium is lifted on Saturday.

ESPN first reported on the agreement between Isaac and the Magic.

It is another success story for Isaac, whose career seemed to be in jeopardy a few years ago because injuries kept him out of action for two and a half years.

The Magic's No. 6 pick in the 2017 draft injured his left knee in a game in Washington on Jan. 1, 2020. He returned seven months later and played two games in the pandemic bubble, but tore his left anterior cruciate ligament in the second of those appearances. Isaac had other setbacks on the road to recovery – including a right hamstring injury that required surgery – and his 2022-23 season ended early because of an adductor injury.

But last season was a return in many ways.

He averaged 6.8 points on 51% shooting, played in 58 games – 13 more than in the previous four seasons combined – and helped the Magic win the Southeast Division and return to the playoffs. Orlando coach Jamahl Mosley repeatedly praised Isaac for his defensive skills.

“Elite, elite, elite defender,” Mosley said toward the end of the season.
