Massachusetts: Rideshare drivers' union issue put to vote

BOSTON — Efforts to unionize rideshare drivers continued Tuesday as organizers submitted the final signatures needed to get the petition on the November ballot. Their initiative calls on the state's voters to approve a drivers' union and secure a seat at the bargaining table for better working conditions, wages and benefits.

The 12,429 signatures were delivered by the Drivers Demand Justice Coalition to Minister William Galvin just one day before the July 3 deadline. If voters approve the petition, drivers will be able to form a union with collective bargaining rights.

Wilson Perez, a driver from Worcester, doesn't make enough money driving for the company to pay his monthly bills. He works as a rideshare driver because he has to support his wife and children.
