Magic agrees to renegotiate contract with Jonathan Isaac worth $84 million

The Magic have had a surprisingly good offseason so far. Not only did Orlando add veteran shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, but they now have the ability to retain one of their up-and-coming players for the foreseeable future.

Power forward Jonathan Isaac has revised his contract with the team, via Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

“Orlando Magic F Jonathan Isaac has agreed to renegotiate and extend his contract for five years and $84 million, sources told ESPN,” Wojnarowski tweeted.

In five seasons in Orlando, Isaac averaged 8.4 points on 44.9% shooting, 5.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 22.2 minutes per game despite missing two years with a torn ACL. The 2017 sixth-rounder is expected to be a key part of the team's rotation as it continues to climb the highly competitive Eastern Conference.

Although Isaac's raise will be significant, the exact terms are not yet available, according to Dana Gauruder of Hoops Rumors.

“Isaac had a non-guaranteed salary of $17.4 million for next season that was set to become fully guaranteed in January,” Gauruder explained. “The breakdown of the contract has not been released, but renegotiating a raise for next season using salary cap space would give Orlando the ability to take smaller salary cuts in future seasons.”

With the team's most important offseason moves most likely behind them now, what will the team's rotation look like next season?

Isaac will certainly get a lot of room to play after that kind of money, but he could also compete with first-round pick Tristan da Silva depending on how quickly the rookie adjusts to the pro game. The former Colorado product is listed as a small forward, but his 6'1″ and 220 pounds could put him fourth in smaller lineups. For reference, Isaac is 6'1″ and 220 pounds.

For now, however, Isaac will continue to back up 2024 All-Star Paolo Banchero. The Florida State alumnus' rise coincides with his team's rise, as the Magic reached the playoffs last year for the first time since 2019-20.

Barring any unforeseen changes, Isaac will be part of a second unit that also includes da Silva, point guard Cole Anthony, shooting guard Gary Harris and center Mo Wagner, who Orlando also signed to a contract extension on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the starting lineup will most likely include Caldwell-Pope, Banchero, point guard Jalen Suggs, small forward Franz Wagner and center Wendell Carter Jr.

Although “KCP” and da Silva are the only two new additions, the young team should benefit from another year of development. The Magic won't be title contenders for a few more years, but their patience will pay off as their players continue to improve.
