Utah teenager is struck by lightning while hiking and miraculously survives after being found unconscious

A Utah teenager miraculously survived a lightning strike after being found unconscious during a church walk, attributing his survival to “divine intervention.”

Jacob Johnson, 18, was hiking with 50 other teenagers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Salina Canyon on Thursday when the group was struck by lightning, KSL TV reported.

“We started hiking and it started raining pretty heavily. I remember thinking, 'This is kind of scary,'” Johnson recalled to the outlet.

The footage captures the moment an earth-shattering crack occurred near Johnson, who was walking along a muddy path during the rainstorm.

The teenage hikers screamed in fear and confusion, with several of them shouting, “I just got hit by a car.”

As the group tried to regain their bearings, one of the hikers can be heard off-screen saying, “Jacob Johnson and I just got hit. I'm fine, but he's not so good.”

The camera pans down to Johnson, who appears to be unconscious and lying motionless on the floor with a black garbage bag wrapped around his body.

“I remember it felt like someone had just hit me in the head with a baseball bat. I flew forward and passed out,” Johnson said.

The teenager remembers waking up dazed and thinking he had died.

“I thought, you know, is that it? You know, did I just die? I thought about all the things I wanted to accomplish in my life,” Johnson said.

“I just had an overwhelming feeling of love from my Heavenly Father because I knew I had more to do in this world, and from that moment on I knew everything was going to be okay.”

Johnson and six other teenagers were subsequently taken to the hospital, the outlet said.

The 18-year-old suffered a mild concussion and was released a few hours later.

“It's truly a miracle under the circumstances,” Johnson told the outlet. “It must have been divine intervention because there's no way I could just fall to the ground unconscious and be fine the next day.”

However, he is convinced that his faith protected him during this horrific ordeal.

“If we have faith, faith in our God, we can get through these things, that's what I've learned,” Johnson said.

The wet ground acted as a conductor for the lightning, causing several teenagers to be electrocuted, the source said.

Salina Canyon is located about 225 kilometers outside of Salt Lake City.

In the United States, about 300 people are struck by lightning each year, with an average of 86 fatalities, according to the National Weather Service.

The probability that an average person will be struck by lightning in his or her lifetime is 1 in 600,000.

Even the weakest thunderstorms can produce lightning, and most fatal lightning strikes occur while hiking, swimming or playing golf, according to the agency.
