The Volcano of New Jersey

You've heard hundreds of people say that New Jersey has it all, and here's more proof. Did you know that New Jersey even has its own volcano?

Every time we hear about an earthquake, a volcanic eruption or a tornado, we here in New Jersey breathe a sigh of relief because we think that these things don't happen here. But that's not always true.

New Jersey's own volcano

Although they are rare and usually do not reach the magnitude that other states have to contend with, we all know that New Jersey can and does experience tornadoes and earthquakes. And we suspect that most residents don't even know that we have a volcano to call our own right here in the Garden State.

It is called Beemerville Volcano or, as it is more commonly called, Rutan Hill and is located in Colesville, Sussex County.

And yes, we're talking about a volcano with lava and all. At least at one point in Earth's history. According to New Jersey Digest, our volcano has been dormant for some time. Of course, that's only true if you take 440 million years into account.

The volcano in New Jersey is now quiet

Fast forward to the present, and it seems that Rutan Hill poses little geological threat to us. So what do good people from New Jersey do with a dormant volcano?

Well, we're making it prime real estate, of course. In case you're curious, you might be able to catch a glimpse of Rutan Hill from the hiking trails of High Point State Park, but the report says it's pretty inaccessible unless you have a home or farm right in the area.
