Today flags across Michigan will be lowered to half-staff to honor Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Deputy William “Bill” Butler Jr, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer ordered the lowering of U.S. and Michigan flags at all public buildings and grounds throughout the state to pay tribute to Deputy Butler’s service and sacrifice.

The governor described Butler as “a proud family man, small business owner, and dedicated officer who served both his nation and his neighbors in uniform”.

Deputy Butler’s life was marked by service to his community and country.

He graduated from Hillsdale High School and initially worked at Bailey Factory in Hillsdale.

Later, he served in the United States Army National Guard for 20 years, including a deployment during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

After his military service, Butler joined the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Office, where he served for 12 years.

In addition to his law enforcement career, Butler was also a local businessman.

He owned and operated Pure Realty Team, a Hillsdale Real Estate affiliate.

His personal interests included traveling, boating, fishing, and spending time with his family.

Deputy Butler is survived by his wife, Sarah, their five children, two grandchildren, his parents, and his sister.

Governor Whitmer has encouraged all Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments, and other organizations to join in lowering their flags to honor Deputy Butler’s memory.

This gesture serves as a reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily and the sacrifices they make to keep our communities safe.

The flags will return to full staff on Thursday, July 4, 2024
