South Carolina fugitive wanted for murder and accidents arrested by Virginia police

Stafford County, Virginia – A South Carolina man is in custody following a series of intentional car crashes on Richmond Highway on July 1.

At approximately 6:05 p.m., First Sergeant DW Fetterolf and Deputy XD Bates responded to an accident near Richmond Highway and Coachman Circle. A southbound Subaru SUV had intentionally driven into the rear of a southbound BMW motorcycle, causing the motorcyclist to be thrown onto the hood of the SUV and eventually fall to the pavement. The motorcyclist sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The Subaru driver continued south, intentionally striking a Ford F-150 and pushing it into a railing. The F-150 driver was uninjured. First Sergeant MR Flick and Sergeant JD Hurt observed the Subaru near Courthouse Road and attempted to make a traffic stop.

The suspect, Rome Washington, 40, of Columbia, South Carolina, refused to stop and increased his speed to over 100 miles per hour, driving recklessly and evading attempts to deflate the tires.

Sergeant Hurt performed a PIT maneuver near Enon Road, causing the Subaru to spin and roll over. Washington was uninjured and taken into custody. He faces charges including attempted murder, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, fleeing from a crime, hit and run, attempted assault, vandalism, and several traffic violations. Washington is being held without bail at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
