Fire reported on Hancock Street in Everett, MA – NBC Boston

Firefighters responded to a fire in Everett, Massachusetts on Wednesday morning.

The fire was reported around 8 a.m. in a three-story building on the corner of Hancock and Tappan streets. When firefighters arrived on the scene, thick smoke was pouring out of the building.

A firefighter rescued a three-year-old girl from the third floor of the building. The child was taken to Boston Children's Hospital and the firefighter was also taken to a nearby hospital. Both are expected to be OK.

Fire officials said a mayday call was initially made, but it was soon ended when the firefighter managed to exit the building with the child.

Two Everett Department of Buildings employees were the first to notice the smoke and report the fire. They then ran into the building, helped evacuate residents, and notified firefighters about the child on the third floor.

Aerial photographs showed about half a dozen fire and rescue vehicles on site. Several firefighters were on the roof of the building.

Firefighters were still on site on Wednesday morning, extinguishing embers. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but fire officials believe the fire was not caused by suspicious circumstances.
