The best New England city for a vacation at home is right here in Maine

A new report sheds a positive light on Portland.

Wallethub.com, a popular personal finance website, has released its annual report on the best American cities for a “staycation” vacation, meaning staying at home or close to home (I know, that’s a clever name). Not only does Portland rank high, it is also the highest-ranked New England city on the list.

Portland ranks 20th among the best cities for summer jobs, according to a list of 182 cities included in the survey by Wallethub.com. I have to say, that's a very respectable ranking for Portland, especially since it's one of the highest in the entire Northeast.

Maine scored 52.85 out of 100 possible points. The rating system is based on three main categories: recreation And Food & EntertainmentAnd Peace and relaxationTo be as detailed as possible, these categories are divided into 42 subcategories. You can read the methodology here.

Maine absolutely nailed the recreation category, which is no surprise. It came in second highest. Portland offers people an incredible variety of activities, such as its vast network of trails or countless water sports. Plus, the city seems to be offering more and more tours that people enjoy. There's even a donut tour.

Portland came in lower in the Food & Entertainment category (66th), which seems crazy. The city is known for its culinary excellence. I would rank it as the best city in this category against any small town in America. So maybe Portland's entertainment is causing it to slip down the rankings here? I would disagree, though. There are wonderful museums, numerous professional sports teams, and iconic music venues. I really don't understand how there can be 65 better cities in this category.

Portland's lowest rating came in the recreation and relaxation category, where the city only ranked 104th. The main problem here is the beautiful weather we have. The lack of a consistent weather forecast, especially in the summer, is a big problem. I completely understand that. No one wants to enjoy a week's vacation in a climate where it could rain four out of seven days, even in mid-July. Or, even worse, a beautiful snowstorm in April.

Despite this low ranking, Portland still made the top 20, making it the No. 1 city in New England for vacations at home. The next best city was Burlington, Vermont, which came in at No. 47. So Portland was basically on par with the rest of the region.

Portland wasn't the only Maine city represented, either. The city of Lewiston was represented in the survey, coming in a little lower at number 157. The city's highest ranking was in the recreation category, at number 111.

So which city was the top city on the staycation list? It was Orlando, Florida. The city with its many amusement parks came in just ahead of Honolulu, Cincinnati and Las Vegas.
