Conservative flagship magazine “clears a path” for Casey DeSantis’ gubernatorial candidacy

Regardless of whether Florida's First Lady runs for governor or not, there is excitement across the country long before the official campaign season begins.

And a prominent commentator in one of America's leading right-wing publications suggests that other candidates for the post might be better off stepping down.

“I have been approached in recent weeks by (possibly self-appointed) representatives of the Florida gubernatorial candidates, a list currently being built that consists of the following individuals: Attorney General Ashley Moody; Deputy Governor Jeanette Nunez; Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson; CFO Jimmy Patronis; and US representatives Michael Waltz, Byron DonaldsAnd Matt Gaetz”, writes the National Review Neal B. Freeman.

“Perhaps the GOP should avoid the political frottage of a crowded primary and simply clear a lane for Casey DeSantis.”

Survey just last month, as the former editor of the National Review reported.

According to a survey memo published in June by Florida Atlantic UniversityWith 43% support, she leads the field of candidates, ahead of Donald with 19%, while Patronis and Gaetz are even further behind.

A Survey conducted in April A poll conducted by FAU found that 38 percent of 372 Florida Republicans surveyed would vote for the first lady in a head-to-head race against Gaetz, who would receive 16 percent support in that scenario.

A University of North Florida Polling Laboratory A November 2023 poll showed the First Lady with 22 percent approval, a lead in a large field of potential candidates.

Both the First Lady and the Governor commented on the speculation.

While she acknowledged that the speech left her “humbled,” she stressed that the obvious enthusiasm for her candidacy was due to her “rock star” husband and his work as head of state.

“I’ll tell you this: When people talk about me running for governor, I think that speaks very highly of the governor himself,” Casey DeSantis said in a May edition of the Conservative Review Podcast. “I think when people see me, it's because they're so happy about everything this governor has done for the state of Florida.”

“And when people start saying, 'Oh, you know, you should run,' it's because Governor DeSantis is a rock star and people are so proud of everything he's done for this state,” she added.

Also in May, Ron DeSantis discussed a candidacy in 2026, but all but ruled it out on behalf of Casey DeSantis.

He said that if he had to “characterize her interest in entering the political thicket as a candidate,” he would “rate it zero.”

The First Lady has played a key role in the administration's policy initiatives since 2019, and the former television news anchor would pose a formidable challenge on the debate stage for any elected official seeking to take over her husband's job.

And national commentators have certainly noticed this.
