The population of the smallest city in Massachusetts is shrinking by double digits

The New England states are some of the most densely populated states in the country. This happens to include our densely populated state of Massachusetts. You might expect that every city in the New England states would have a relatively decent population. In fact, all of New England has an average of 236.9 people per square mile, which is much higher than the national average of 79.56 people per square mile. Although Massachusetts is the most populous of all the New England states, it does have one city with a population that is even lower than the national average of people per square mile.

In fact, the Bay State's smallest city is the ONLY city in the entire state with a population in the double digits. And it's shrinking! Every other city in Massachusetts has at least triple digits. And overall, only three cities have populations under 200.

So which three cities have such small populations? And which of them has a population in the double digits? Let's take a look at the three cities with the smallest populations in Massachusetts…

3. Mount Washington

Located in the far southwestern corner of Massachusetts, this Berkshire County town has a population of 188 according to the 2020 census. It is also home to the Bay State's tallest waterfalls at Bash Bish Falls State Park.

2.Monroe

The town of Monroe is located on the northwestern edge of Franklin County, but the children who live there attend schools in Berkshire County. It also borders Vermont. All 103 residents who live there.

1. Gosnold

The smallest town in Massachusetts is Gosnold. The town's population is only in the double digits, as it only has a population of 70 according to the 2020 census. However, other recent reports put the number down to 64 and even as low as 38 since then. The town is located in Dukes County, right on Buzzards Bay. Of the 140.2 square miles that technically make up Gosnold, only 13.2 are actually land. The rest is water. Perhaps many of the remaining residents who live there don't mind much because they are right on the beach and have access to the water.

And there they are, the smallest towns in Massachusetts. They all have far fewer residents than the New England average of 236.9 people per square mile. Some New England towns aren't quite as densely populated after all.
